Shirley M. George

Shirley M. (Kirkendall) George, 93 years of age, of Beatrice passed away at Beatrice Health and Rehab Sunday afternoon, April 27, 2014. She was born on February 20, 1921 at Marysville, KS to Jess and Sylvia (Streka) Kirkendall, and was a 1938 graduate of Wymore High School. Shirley and Elmer George were married on June 7, 1939 and lived in Beatrice except when living in Aruba for 7 years. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Beatrice and had been involved in the women's circle. Shirley enjoyed flowers, traveling, reading, attending her grandchildren's activities, and collected chicken items.
Survivors include two sons Michael George and wife Laurie of Seward, and Anthony George and wife Betty of Beatrice; daughters Barbara Gudsnuk of Orono, Maine and Gayle Bekemeyer and husband Gregory of Washington, KS; 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Jess and Sylvia (Streka) Kirkendall; husband Elmer George (2011); brothers Norman and Stanton Kirkendall; sister Bonnie Martin; daughter in law Ruth Ann George; and son in law Joseph Gudsnuk.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, May 1, 2014 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Robert Barnhill officiating. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The body will lie in state Wednesday from 11-9:00 at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice. A memorial has been established to the church with the funeral home in charge. A scriptural prayer service will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday at the church.
