Irene M. Smith Obituary (1933 - 2015)

Merlyn Irene Wiemers Powell Smith, 81, of Barneston passed away peacefully Wednesday November 18, 2015 at the Beatrice Community Hospital. She was born December 28, 1933 in Odell, Neb. to George and Hazel (Gritz) Wiemers. Irene enjoyed camping, fishing and playing darts. In her later years she spent time watching the birds in her backyard . She was a great cook, inviting family to her house for holiday dinners over the years. She had an upbeat and caring personality that everyone was drawn to. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. Irene is survived by her devoted husband of 21 years, Melvin H. Smith; brother, George Wiemers; her children, Douglas Powell, Debra and husband Donald Huntington, Dennis Powell, Cheri Hiner and companion Clifford Taylor; step children, Renee and husband Tim Taylor, Erin and husband Scott Coyle, Sean Smith, Will and wife Diana Smith; sister in-laws, Elsie Kay and husband Roger Sejkora, Judy and husband Cory Powell; daughter in-law, Mary Jo Powell; Eighteen grandchildren, Twenty One great grandchildren. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, sister Shirley Wiemers and son, David Powell. Celebration of life service will be held December 5, 2015 at 11:00 AM the Christian Church in Liberty with Pastor Jim Hackel officiating. Casual dress is encouraged.
