Marie L. Bartels of Pickrell went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 10, 2018. She was born in rural Pickrell on February 21, 1937 to P.T. and Sophia (Remmers) Hofeling. She was a 1956 graduate of Adams High School and furthered her education at Dana College. On December 7, 1958 she was united in marriage to Merlan S. Pieper of Burr, Nebraska. Together they owned the General Store in Burr until 1985 and they belonged to the Burr Hope Lutheran Church. They moved to Waterville, KS for several years until Merlan's passing in 1990. Marie moved to Beatrice, NE where she met Leroy Bartels and they were united in marriage. After Leroy's passing, Marie moved to Pickrell.\nMarie enjoyed living in a small town where she could call people 'friend'. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with her siblings for family gatherings; even if it was just to eat a burger together. Playing cards and board games were often a favorite of hers and she spent a great deal of time sewing. Marie worked 10 plus years for Personal Nursing Care. It gave her great joy to care for others in their time of need. Marie was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Beatrice and even though she could not attend the way that she would have liked in her later years, Christ was always in her heart. Marie will be missed by all those fortunate to know her.\nShe is survived by her son, Steve Pieper and his wife Sheri of Pickrell, NE; daughter Jeanette Burlie and her husband Todd of Wichita, KS; her step-children Ron Bartels, Bill Bartels, Clint Bartels, Matt Bartels, and Jana Bartels. Marie had 5 grandchildren and 14 step-grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren and 12 step great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings Willy Hofeling, Herman Hofeling and Lydia Lindquist and a host of extended nephews and nieces and great nephews and nieces.\nShe was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law; husbands Merlan Pieper and Leroy Bartels; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.\nFuneral services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, December 14, 2018 at St. John Lutheran Church with Reverend Leah Lawson officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at the Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice. The body will lie in state Thursday from 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice with the family greeting friends from 5:00-7:00 PM, and at the church one hour preceding the funeral. A family prayer service will be held at 9:45 Am Friday at the church. A memorial has been established to the family's choice with the funeral home in charge.
