Leonard W. Burger, 87 years of age, of Beatrice passed away at the Good Samaritan Society in Beatrice Saturday afternoon, August 21, 2021. He was born on October 10, 1933 in Beatrice to Fred and Lena (Niemeyer) Burger. He was baptized at First Trinity Lutheran on October 29th, 1933 and confirmed on March 30th, 1947 also at First Trinity. He was a 1951 graduate of DeWitt High School. Leonard married his high school sweetheart, Joan Brolhorst on April 5, 1953. Leonard served his country in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955 and was deployed overseas during the Korean Conflict. He then joined the Nebraska Army National Guard for ten years. During this time he took over the family farm when his parents retired and farmed until his retirement. He also drove a school bus for Tri-County Schools for 30+ years. Leonard was a lifelong member of First Trinity Lutheran Church near Beatrice where he sang in the choir and held positions from elder to church synodical representative. He was a former member of the DeWitt American Legion, holding Post and County Commander positions and was a current member of the Biting-Norman Post #27, American Legion in Beatrice. He was also a member of the NRA and the NFO (National Farmers Organization). Leonard enjoyed polka dancing, bowling, playing cards, and more recently enjoyed restoring antique tractors.\nSurvivors include his wife, Joan; children Phyl Burger of Woodbury, MN., Lyle (Pamala) Burger of Kearney, and Kim (Mike) Zellers of Omaha; 5 grandchildren: Ryan (Lisa) Burger of Lincoln, Melissa (Travis) Buckshire of Butler, PA, Matt Burger of Axtell, Neil (Vickie) Zellers of Richmond, TX, and Tyler Zellers of Manhattan, KS; 8 great grandchildren; brothers Roland Burger of Treynor, IA and Bob Burger of Menomonee Falls, WI; sister Rose (AlDean) Blome of Hallam. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; brother Ordale Burger; and sister Verona Spilker.\nFuneral services will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at First Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Beatrice with Reverend Timothy Wagner officiating. Interment will be at the First Trinity Lutheran Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Army and the American Legion Post #27, from Beatrice. The body will lie in state from 11:00 AM-8:00 PM Tuesday at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice with the family greeting friends from 5-7:00 PM, and in state Wednesday at the church after 9:30 AM. A family prayer service will be held at 10:10 AM Wednesday at the church school. A memorial has been established to the Alzheimer's Association or the First Trinity Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund with the church elders in charge.
