Dean Day Obituary (1925 - 2015)

Dean Day, 90 years of age, of Odell, NE passed away at Bryan East Medical Center in Lincoln Saturday afternoon, June 6, 2015. He was born on May 23, 1925 near Barneston, NE to John and Nellie (Lytle) Day, and attended Barneston High School. Dean was drafted into the United States Army on his 18th birthday. He served his country in the South Pacific Theater from 1943-1946. Dean and Esther Kaufman were married on May 23, 1948. To this union were born two daughters, Kathryn Louise and Deena Marie. He had lived south of Wymore and Diller, west of Odell, and moved to his current farm north of Odell in 1962. Dean was a member of the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Wymore since 1996; Lifetime member of the American Legion Post #0231, Odell and the Disabled American Veterans; and member of the VFW Post #1077, Beatrice. He had been employed on the railroad as a youth, and started farming in 1946. He also had been employed part time at Marshalls Produce, the south booster station, Cominco, Barr's Grain, as a custodian at the Odell High School, Midwest Livestock Systems, Odell Elevator, and the Fiberglass plant in Odell. Dean enjoyed farming, playing cards, visiting with friends, and spending time with his family. Survivors include 2 daughters, Kathy Nelson and husband Marvin, and Deena Powelson, all of Odell; 6 grandchildren Jason Nelson and wife Dani of Bennington, Dusty Nelson and wife Jess of Lincoln, Heidi Nelson of Bennington, Misty Powelson, Mindy Brooks and husband Chris, and Tyler Powelson, all of Iola, KS; 4 great grandchildren Adalyn Joy Nelson, Sutton Ann Nelson, Jack Dean Nelson, Easton Eugene Brooks, and 2 more on the way; and 2 sister Dorothy Vasey of Wymore, and Betty Willey of Beatrice. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Nellie (Lytle) Day; wife Esther (2008); and brothers Jack K. Day and Bud Day. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday at the Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Wymore with Reverend Rob Garton officiating. Interment will be at the Odell Cemetery. Military graveside services will be provided by the American Legion Post #0231, Odell. The body will lie in state Thursday from 12-5:00, Friday from 9-9:00 at the Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home in Wymore with the family greeting friends from 6-7:30 PM, and at the church one hour preceding the service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the church and the Odell Legion with the funeral home in charge. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 AM Saturday at the church.
