Lincoln, Nebraska
Brian Lee Hughes was born on January 28, 1972, in Beatrice, Nebraska. As the middle child, Brian embraced his role in the family exactly as you'd expect—he became the comedian. Whether he was telling a story, or delivering the perfect one-liner he had the ability to make people laugh. His irreverent wit was legendary, but beneath that playful exterior was a man with an enormous heart who loved deeply and stood by the people he cared about.
Brian graduated from Southern High School in 1990. Thanks to the encouragement of Betty Brackhahn, he discovered a love for Speech and Drama—a talent that served him well for the rest of his life. He never met a conversation he couldn't improve with impeccable timing, a little embellishment, or just enough sarcasm to keep everyone guessing whether he was serious.
He worked as a Project Manager at Hinkle & McCoy for seven years, where he enjoyed bossing people around while also showing them the compassion of a good mentor.
Brian's interests were as memorable as he was. He was a passionate Husker football fan, an enthusiastic meme curator (always finding the perfect meme to make any situation a little more awkward), and a devoted gamer who proudly accumulated an astonishing $500 million in Grand Theft Auto Online. He loved getting lost in Western novels and films, especially those featuring John Wayne, and was an avid fan of Longmire. But those who knew Brian best, knew the pinnacle of his passion was The Man of Steel. He was a proud collector of Superman comic books and treasured attending Comic-Con with his son, Andrew—time filled with memories he cherished. Family meant everything to Brian. He became the unofficial keeper of family memories, preserving stories, and moments that might otherwise have been forgotten. He understood that memories are one of the greatest gifts we leave behind.
Among his more unique honors, Brian was named an Honorary Admiral in the Nebraska Navy—a distinction he enjoyed with the same good humor he brought to everything else.
Brian's life was filled with unexpected twists and turns, but through it all he remained fiercely loyal, endlessly compassionate, and unapologetically himself.
He will be remembered not only for his quick wit and unforgettable sense of humor, but for his generous spirit, unwavering loyalty, and the countless lives he made brighter simply by being Brian.
Brian is survived by his son, Andrew Hughes; his mother, Carol Hughes; his brothers, Alan (Diane) Hughes, Scott Hughes, Arthur (Leigh-Anne) Hughes; his sister, Jodi (Chris) Coen; his aunt, Janice (Kirby) Cohorst; uncle, George Sapcoe; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a host of extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Paul E. Hughes, II and his grandparents, Paul E. and Lola Hughes and Joe and Relma Buckholz.
