Berneice E Ames Obituary (1927 - 2013)

Berneice E. Ames, 86 years of age, of Wymore passed away at the Beatrice Community Hospital Friday morning, April 19, 2013. She was born on February 24, 1927 in Kearney, NE to Melvin and Alice (Newell) Cooley. She had lived in Blue Springs since 1933 and attended Blue Springs High School. She and Melvin "Shorty" Ames were married on May 12, 1945 in Marysville. KS. Berneice had been a member of the Blue Springs United Methodist Church and had served as Sunday school superintendent, quilting club, and Willing Helpers; had been a Girl Scout leader for over 35 years; and had been a member of the Wymore American Legion Auxiliary and the Alanon, TOPS. She enjoyed quilting, embroidery work, baking and cooking. Survivors include her children Gary Ames and wife Joanne of Wymore, Alice Layman of Wymore, and Olen Ames and wife Kathy of Beatrice; 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson; foster son Jim Whaley of Wymore; brother and sisters in law Beulah Lawson of Albuquerque , NM, Kenneth Ames of Beatrice, and Jackie Leland of California. She was preceded in death by her parents Melvin and Alice (Newell) Cooley; Husband Melvin "Shorty" Ames (February 23, 2013); grandson Scott Ames; son in law Turk Layman; and 2 brothers and 1 sister. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at the Blue Springs United Methodist Church with Reverend Dan Albers officiating. Interment will be in the Blue Springs Cemetery. The body will lie in state Monday from 10-9:00 at the Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home with the family greeting friends from 7-8:30 P.M., and at the church one hour preceding the service on Tuesday. A family prayer service will be held at 9:45 A.M. Monday at the church. A memorial has been established to the family's choice with the funeral home in charge.
