Don B. Noakes, 94 years of age, of Filley, NE. passed away at the Beatrice Community Hospital Wednesday morning, January 25, 2012. He was born on May 14, 1917 in Lincoln, NE. to John L. and Olive Grayce (Cornelius) Noakes. He was a 1935 graduate of Filley High School. Don and June Moslander were married on December 14, 1941 in Filley, Nebraska. Don served his country in the United States Army building airfields during World War II, serving from February 19, 1942 until November 25, 1945. He had lived in Beatrice from 1960 until moving to Filley in 1997. Don had worked for State Farm Insurance, Blue Cross Insurance, American Charter, and Canning Trucking until retiring in 1998. Don and Mariane Barnes Young were married on June 7, 1997. He had been a member of the First Assembly of God in Beatrice, and currently is a member at the Heartland Community Church in Filley; and former member of the Bitting-Norman Post #27, American Legion and the Geddes-Thober Post# 1077, Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in Beatrice. Don enjoyed watching Husker football and volleyball games, and supporting and watching all his grandchildren enjoy and succeed in their lives.
Survivors include his wife Mariane; son Donald "Dee" Noakes and special friend Karen Rehm of Beatrice; daughter Kim Behrens and husband Rick of Lincoln; grandchildren Eric Behrens and Sarah Behrens; Step children Tom Young and wife Jane of Filley, Judy Eychner and husband George of Kerrville, TX., and Pat Palombi and husband John of Jacksonville, FL.; 8 step grandchildren and 7 step great grandchildren; sister Shirley Bruns of Beatrice; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents John L. and Olive Grayce (Cornelius) Noakes; 1st wife June Noakes (1995); 2 infant brothers and 1 infant sister.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice with Reverend David Bigley and Reverend Allen Harder officiating. Interment will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday in the Filley Cemetery. The body will lie in state from 10-9:00 Friday at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice with the family greeting friends from 6:30-8:00. A memorial has been established to the Filley Cemetery and to the People's City Mission in Lincoln with Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in charge. You may sign Don's guest book at www.ghchapel.com.
